Nikon Speedlight SB-600 is a compact, yet powerful, flash gun, which is loaded with lots of features. It serves as a solid base for the Nikon Creative Lighting System when used in combination with Nikon D70 or D2H digital SLRs. Released in 2004, it gained a lot of popularity and respect among the Nikon users for its consistent performance and high quality.
Nikon SB-600 is a budget version of the SB-800 for reduced prices, you lose strength, some accessories, and some major function. Other then that the SB-600 shares allot of features from its big brother the SB-800.
One of the most important features is the wireless I-TTL capabilities. Altough at reduced power, the SB-600 is still usable in multiple flash set-ups. To help in this situation, the SB-600 also has two Ready Lights located on both left and right sides of the front that can be easily viewed from afar. SB-600 can also be issued a warning sounded for further assistance.
The head of SB 600 swivels left and right as well as vertically. It has a manual mode for controlling the flash and a slave mode. It has some characteristics of high-powered management and a clever way to expectations that make the camera still has not satisfied the battery life significantly.
You need four AA batteries for this flash. Nikon SB-600 does not recycle silently, like more recent flash units. Recycling time varies depending on the type of batteries being used with the flash. Typically between 3-4 seconds for the unit, which is quite nice. Notice that no external power connection is available in the Nikon Speedlight SB-600, which can reduce the time further recycling. The battery compartment door is well-designed. It’s easy to open and close, and it won’t get in your way when you need to swap your batteries quickly.
LCD is reasonably sized, the layout of the menus is clean and easy to follow, also the symbols are readable and easy to understand. The backlight comes on when needed and can also be controlled from the camera body using the same switch for the camera top LCD light.
Nikon SB 600 features a metal mounting foot, which is highly resistant to wear. The only possible drawback is that being so rigid, it is likely to damage the camera’s hot shoe in case of an impact. This is a small observation, but the accident could happen, and in such cases it is often cheaper to fix the camera flash. Locking lever is also very nice touch. Make a flash attachment and release very easy.
Nikon Speedlight SB-600 comes with a high quality case and a flash stand. The flash and the stand can be accomodated by the case, so you can use the stand for remote flash operations when necessary. The case also features a belt loop, which can come in handy.
Overall SB 600 is a very good flash for all situations. Ready light, Nikon SB-600 flash can be a great choice for many photo hobbyists and even professionals.
